The Kirby Institute is a leading global research institute dedicated to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, with a long-standing program of research focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. An opportunity exists for a Manager, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research, to play a leadership role in the development and implementation of an enhanced strategic commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led research at the Kirby Institute.

This will involve the development of appropriate systems, policies, processes and a cultural framework to support and guide the Institute’s research in this area. The position will establish and manage strategic partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, communities and other relevant stakeholders including research organisations, policy makers and industry partners. The Manager will have a position on the Kirby Institute Executive Committee and report to the Director.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications and previous research project management in Aboriginal Health, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, public health or primary health care settings.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement, ideally with organisations that have alignment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (i.e. peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait representative bodies, Aboriginal Medical Services/Aboriginal Controlled Health Organisations etc).
  • Understanding of and familiarity with programs and research environments related to infectious diseases such as blood-borne viruses and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Experience in and understanding of the monitoring and/or evaluation of health programs or interventions.
  • Sensitivity and respect for the different holistic needs, aspirations, culture, educational backgrounds and issues related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and health care access.
